He was son of Hezekiah and Polly (Wells) Merritt, who parents were native of England, and daughter of Samuel Wells. Hezekiah b. 1775 was one of seven brothers; Andrew, Daniel b. 1772, and Gilbert b. 1774, William, Nelson, Samuel b. 1776, that came to Wyalusing Township about 1810, with their parents William and Hannah (--?--) Merritt. Who were the first settlers of Bradford Co., Pa., and an Island in Susquehanna River was name in his honor. Elijah Merritt reared and married in in Bradford County, but for many years reside in Wyoming County, where died about 1875, at age of 86 years. He served as a soldier in the War of 1812, and in politics was stanch Democrat. in his younger years he followed the trade of millwright and carpenter, but engaged in farming. his wife was a native of Luzerne county (then part of Wyoming County), and daughter of honored pioneer people, her mother having been shelterd in a fort near the scene, and at the time of the Wyoming massacre. The children of his wife were 1. George G., a farmer of Boggs township, no. 97480665; 2. Elijah deceased; 3. Mrs. Clarinda Keeney deceased; 4. Nelson; 5. Berten.

** On his daughter memorial no. 71369841, they have her mother listed as Lucretia (--?--)??, but I do not see any other record that he married to anyone of that name? And at time of birth, 1833, she was in the middle four kids of Jane Ann (Yearington) Merritt, and he was married to Jane Ann Yearington, and at the time? Unless Jane Ann (Yearington) Merritt had a nickname?
