Funeral Services Held for Ausby Ballard

Funeral services were held in the Carmel Baptist church Sunday afternoon at two-thirty o'clock for Ausby Ballard, life-long resident of Lawrence county and a valued employee of the John Mansville Company in Natchez for the past ten years. Mr. Ballard died in the Natchez General Hospital at an early hour Friday morning following an acute heart attack. He had been in the hospital since the night of January 19 when he suffered a severe heart attack and collapsed while at work. He was fifty-five.

His pastor, Rev. O. C. Ladnier, pastor of the Carmel Baptist church was in charge of the services and was assisted by Rev. Harold E. O'Chester, pastor of the First Baptist church in Purvis and a former pastor of the Carmel church. Burial was in the Carmel church cemetery with the Saulters Funeral Home of Prentiss in charge of arrangements. The high esteem in which Mr. Ballard was held was shown by the unusually large crowd of relatives and friends attending the services and the profusion of beautiful floral tributes. The crowd was the largest ever assembled at the Carmel church with approximately six hundred people present. Active pall bearers, all nephews of Mr. Ballard, were Howard Thames, Clell King, Arthur King, Dudley Ballard, Thomas Nelson and Leroy King. Honorary pall bearers were fellow employees at the John Mansville company in Natchez with thirty men coming to attend the services.

Rev. Harold O'Chester paid a high tribute to Mr. Ballard praising him for his faith, his faithfulness to his church and his devotion to his family and his sterling worth as a citizen.

The services were concluded at the graveside by Rev. O. C. Ladnier, who read the opening Scripture passages for the services.

A solo, "Sunrise Tomorrow" was sung by the Rev. F. E. Sellers of Monticello and a quartet composed of Rev. Sellers, Rev. James King, Dewey Nelson and Jere Thames sang "When They Ring the Golden Bells for You and Me". W. J. Nelson was pianist, accompanying these numbers and playing appropriate numbers for the processional and recessional.

Mr. Ballard, the son of the late Pink Ballard and Rebecca Ballard of the southern part of Lawrence county, was married twenty-nine years ago to Miss Bertie Rhea Davis of Monticello and since that time had lived near Monticello. He was an active member of the Carmel Baptist church.

He leaves his wife; one son Aubilyn Ballard; one grandson Michael Ballard; one brother Estus Ballard of Buras, Louisiana, and six sisters, Mrs. Rosa Thames and Mrs. Louis Thames, Jayess; Mrs. Maggie King, Ruth; Mrs. Claude King and Mrs. Hulon Thames, Monticello and Mrs. Dewitt Nelson of New Hope with a number of nephews and nieces.
