James Robert Eddelman, 83, of Richland Drive died at 8:23 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at the Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
Mr. Eddelman was a U.S. Navy veteran. He retired from the Columbus Police Department in 1973 after 20 years of service. He was a medic at Cummins Engine Co. for 15 years and at the Atterbury Job Corp hospital for 10 years.
He was a member of the St. John's Masonic Lodge and Fraternal Order of Police. He was a medic and one of the founders of the Columbus Police Deparment Operation Life Ambulance Service. He was an instructor for the Red Cross First Aid courses for many years. He was a member of Berean Bible Church.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. Calling will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from noon until service time Wednesday. A Masonic memorial service will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard will conduct a military graveside service. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Berean Missionary Fund, the American Heart Association or to Hospice of South Central Indiana.
Born in Waymansville July 10, 1921, Mr. Eddelman was the son of Clarence Dale and Alice G. Hart Eddelman. He married Hazel Wooten Nov. 1942, and Opal L. Doles Barkes July 19, 1980.
Survivors include his second wife; a son, Michael Dale Eddelman of Denton, Texas; a stepson, Michael Gene Barkes of Columbus; a daughter, Sherry Bornman of Brown County; a stepdaughter, Donita Goddard of Columbus; grandchildren, M. Seth Eddelman, Lori Hawk, Brian Barkes, Benjamin Barkes, Dannyelle Justice, John A. Goddard and Peter Rodarte; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife in May 1979; a daughter, Donna Kay Patton; a brother, H. Dale Eddelman; and sisters, Margaret Stearman and Sarah Katherine Records.
