Helen Baginski Shimek, a lifelong resident of Erie, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Fairfax County Hospital in Virginia, on September 14, 2004. She is survived by her daughters, Jo Anna M. Shimek, of Deerfield, Ill., and Helen Paula Shimek of McLean, Va., to whom she was totally devoted. She is also survived by a brother, Frank Baginski of Erie, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul B. Shimek, her parents, Walter and Josephine Baginski, her sister, Genevieve Baginski Spaeder, and her brothers, Casmir, Edward, and Sigmund. As a young woman she worked for General Electric and American Sterilizer. She volunteered with the American Red Cross and was active with the Soroptimist Club. She was an active bowler who once nearly scored a perfect game. Following the death of her husband she returned to the workforce retiring as an Administrative Assistant for the Visiting Nurse Association of Erie County. She was an active member of the International Association of Administrative Professionals, Presque Isle Chapter, and attended many national and international conventions. During her retirement she became an avid bridge player and formed many new friendships. She enjoyed travel both foreign and domestic and loved to shop. Friends may call at the Brugger Funeral Home 1595West 38th Street at Greengarden Boulevard on Friday, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Services will be there at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St Peter Cathedral. Burial at Calvary Cemetery.
