FUSSELL, ALYCE HELEN—Alyce Helen Fussell was born to Frank and Marie Bartu Elznic on December 18, 1908, at the family farm near Milligan. She passed from this life on March 21, 2007, at the age of 98.

She was one of 13 children.

As a young adult, she was employed as a waitress at the Geneva hotel where she met her husband, Ben. They were married in Washington, Kan., on September 7, 1932. They were privileged to celebrate 74 years of marriage.

Three children—Glen Roger, Jo Ann and Delbert Dean, completed the family. Alyce was a homemaker totally devoted to her family. She excelled in cooking and baking and no family dinner was complete without her homemade rolls. A favorite pastime was gardening which was a love she shared with her son Glen.

She led 4-H clubs, teaching homemaking skills. Her loving ways led her to babysit several local children. They became family and she always had time for them. Alyce was employed as a sewing supervisor at the Youth Development Center. She enjoyed her work very much and never missed a day of work in 15 years.

During World War II, the Fussell house was home for several military families. Alyce was patient with the young women and helped them in many ways. These relationships developed into lifelong friendships.

Alcye was a faithful member of Silver Link Rebekah Lodge and the Geneva Mothers Club. She was a member of the Geneva United Methodist church for over 70 years. She enjoyed working in UMW, the circles, and attending the adult Sunday school class.

She and Ben were church custodians for a number of years, a labor of love for Alyce. On April 29, 2001, Ben and Alyce were honored by the church with the naming of the Fussell Fellowship Hall. They were humbled and blessed by this recognition.
Alyce and Ben enjoyed many trips throughout the United States, but Alyce was most comfortable in her home. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and enjoyed hosting family gatherings.

Alyce enjoyed good health most of her life, but in July of 2003, a fall made it necessary for her to enter Heritage Crossings where she remained until her death.

Alyce is preceded in death by her parents, son Glen, six brothers, three sisters, and son-in-law, Lowell Heath.

Alyce is survived by her husband, Ben, son Del and wife Lynne; and daughter, Jo Ann Heath; grandchildren and spouses, Steven and Amy Heath, Cindy and Greg Schwaninger, Kathleen and Mark Viola-Press, Susan and Dave Spangler, Craig Smith; great-grandchildren, Ben Heath and Margaret Jane Maffin, Adam and Brett Schwaninger, Megan Smith and Josh Beeman; sisters, Emilye Zenisek, Mildred Nemeskal, and Agnes Stofer, nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva, on March 24, with the Rev. Ron Harris officiating.

Susan Kleinschmidt accompanied Delwin Myers who sang, “His Eye is on the Sparrow,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “In the Garden.”

Private family committal of ashes was held in the Geneva Public Cemetery.
