Eight months before the start of the Civil War on 02 April 1860, she married Washington Lafayette Emory. He was born on 11 August 1840 in La Grange, Troup County. His parents were Samuel Aurelius Emory and Susan Elizabeth (Harrison) Emory. Washington died on 06 May 1922 in Choudrant, Lincoln, Louisiana.
Martha and Washington were both born in Georgia and lived there during the Civil War. By January 1866, eight months after the end of the war, they had moved to Louisiana by where their second child was born on January 12, 1866.
