Soon after they were married, John and Martha were living at DeLamere where he operated a general merchandise and hardware store.
By 1910, the couple were living in Wahpeton, North Dakota, where John was working as a commercial trader in lightening rods. By this time, the couple had four children.
For the remainder of his life, John worked as a salesman for Northwestern Sheet and Iron Works.
John and Martha were charter members of the Bethel Lutheran Church.
John died at the age of 58.
