"ELK GARDEN: Mrs. James Brown died last Sunday. The remains were taken away for burial on the 8:15 train Tuesday morning."

This was the note in her burial record at the church:

"Elk Garden, W.Va. May 5, 1889. Mrs. B. Brown [wife] of James Brown, aged about 40 years, died unexpectedly without the Sacraments. She was a good woman."
