Stephen Decker was born in Jefferson County, Ohio (probably on his parents' farm in Island Creek Township) one or two years after his parents and two older siblings moved to Ohio from New Jersey. His mother died in 1820 when he was almost two years old. His father remarried in 1822 and moved to Guernsey County, Ohio, where he appears in the 1830 census as a resident, with his parents and siblings, of Centre Township, Guernsey County, Ohio. At the time of his marriage in 1843 to Mary Elizabeth Crawford, he was living and probably farming in Newark Township, Licking County, Ohio, perhaps with or near his older brother Aaron Decker. While in Licking County, Ohio the first six of his nine children were born, including two daughters who died as infants, Catherine Decker (born 20 August 1848, died 4 August 1849) and Samaria A. Decker (born 27 February 1852, died 23 July 1853) - no Findagrave memorials for either. Between 1853 and 1857 he and his family moved to near Bushnell, McDonough County, Illinois, where he was a farmer and businessman and lived until his death. Bio by Ronald Decker, his great grand nephew.
