Alexis was born Alexander Alexander in Rogasen, Posen in Prussia. He had two families, one with Luisa Friedlander in Prussia and another with his second wife Betsy Davis in Boston, Mass. He emigrated first to England and lived in Liverpool and later married Betsy Davis in Birmingham. He moved to the USA about 1858 and lived in Chicago, eventually settling in Boston where he lived for the rest of his life. He had a number of professions including a bookseller in the family business in Prussia, a Hebrew teacher and Rabbi.
