What I think about……..JOSEPHINE CHING AKIAU

By Catherine Lee Vincent Ah Yo

Josephine Ching Akiau was born October 27, 1900 on the Big Island of Hawaii to Ching Akiau and Mary Kaiawe, according to her Hawaiian Birth Certificate. In 1910, the Census shows that she was living with Lahela Manoa (widowed) on Kahua Camp Road in Honomu Plantatioin in the South Hilo district of the Big Island. Josephine is listed as Lahela's niece. The thought among Josephine's family is that Lahela Manoa was a very good friend of her mother, Mele Kaiewe, and was included as part of their ohana. Josephine married Gabriel Ah Yo on November 18, 1914. Ms. Manoa and Catherine Ah Yo were the witnesses. They had the following children:

Gabriel Ah Yo, Jr March 11, 1915

Herbert G. Ah Yo October 19, 1917

Rose Rachael Ah Yo January 20, 1920

In 1920, the Census shows that the family lived on Honomu Road, Honomu, Hawaii. The census was taken on January 4th, so Rose had not been born yet and so was not included in the census. However, also living with the family was Kaha Manoa (widowed) listed as a Grandmother. Gabriel was a Principal at a Public School and Josephine was a Teacher. Later that year, on June 20th, Gabriel Ah Yo died of Tuberculosis of the lung and throat. On September 2, 1925, Josephine married Manuel Moniz Duarte in Hilo, Hawaii. Moody and Katherine (Ah Yo) Keliihoomalu were the witnesses. They had the following children:

Ethelbertha Duarte 1927

Elgin Duarte 1928

Elaine Duarte 1929

The 1930 Census shows that Josephine and Manuel lived in South Hilo, Hawaii. Josephine's children Gabriel and Rose and their children, Ethel, Elgin, and Elaine. Josephine's son, Herbert, lived with Lahela Manoa. According to Uncle Elgin Duarte, Herbert never returned home to l ive. In 1959, Josephine officially changed her name from "Josephine A. Duarte" to "Josephine Akiau and in 1960 she was issued a Hawaiian Birth Certificate, certifying that she was born in Hawaii and that her mother was Hawaiian. Josephine Akiau Duarte passed away on June 14, 1971 in Hilo, Hawaii.

** A few notes. I have included "Ching" in Josephine's name as a reference to her father, Akiau Ching". I do not know why she kept her last name as "Akiau", and her siblings used "Ching". Uncle Elgin Duarte remembers going to Kona with his mother, Josephine, to a church cemetery. He was not allowed to get out of the car, but he thinks Josephine was visiting her mother's grave. He does not know where this church is, although Auntie Elaine Duarte Hara thinks that the church and all the records were burned in a fire.
