Benjamin Rheinschmidt, known as Ben, was born with given name Bernhardt, 11 Feb 1867 in Brown Co., Ohio to European immigrants. His father was Frank Xaver Rheinschmidt, born in Germany and his mother was Johanna Rittner, born in Austria. He later changed his surname to the anglicized spelling Reinsmith. Ben is the progenitor of the Reinsmith family in the State of Kentucky, moving to the Bourbon and Nicholas County areas of Central Kentucky from the Ripley, Brown County, Ohio area in about 1900.

He married Mamie D. Sosby 6 Mar 1906 in Carlisle, Nicholas Co., KY. They had 5 sons: Walter B., Earl Edward, Sanford Dailey, Fred Raymond and Otis Jay. Earl Edward died as an infant.

He was a farmer and purchased a farm in the East Union Section of Nicholas County in 1909, where he and Mamie basically lived off the land and raised their 4 sons. This was the first known permanent Reinsmith family residence in Kentucky. It was known as "the home place" and even today is referred to in that manner. He was well known and liked in the Nicholas County community and was a successful farmer, who continued to purchase adjoining property until he owned approximately 220 acres. He died 14 Apr 1926 at the home place, which Mamie sold in 1944.

His date of birth is listed as 2 Feb 1867 on his death certificate; however, it is confirmed to be 11 Feb 1867 per a letter from Rev. Andrew Fabian, Pastor, St. Michael's Catholic Church, Ripley, Brown Co., Ohio, dated 22 Jan 1885.
