According to Austrian Church Birth Records, Johanna was born and baptized in House Number 13/228, Gurschdorf, Austria. Her father, Anton Rittner, was a gardener in Gurschdorf, son of the late Joseph Rittner, gardener in Gurschdorf, and his wife Theresia nee Ehnlich in Gurschdorf. Her mother, Anna Maria, daughter of Joseph Grotzner, farmer in Wildschitz and his wife Johanna nee Rother, in Abendorf. Her godparents were Franz Rittner, houseowner in Number 39, and Johanna, wife of Anton Weyner, houseowner in Schlippen.

Johanna immigrated to the United States along with her parents, a brother and two sisters via the port of Bremen, Germany. They arrived at Baltimore, Maryland Sep. 25, 1854, aboard the ship BETA.

Her death certificate lists her date of birth as Aug. 30, 1835 and her maiden name as Critsner, both of which are incorrect. Ohio Death Certificate Number 56356 refers.
