Nuna Burleson Flowers

1918-2013

Nuna Burleson Flowers was born in Florala, Al in 1918. She was raised in the Pensacola area with her 11 brothers and sisters. She went to Tate High School and married Joseph A. Flowers in 1941. She received her Bachelors Degree in Language Arts from Florida State University in 1964 and taught middle school in Pensacola until she retired. After the death of her husband in 1999 she remained in Pensacola for 4 years and relocated to live with her daughter in New York until her death on June 28, 2013. She died of pneumonia while in New York Presbyterian Hospital, Cornell University.

She was the most loving, caring mother, committed to her family and to her profession. In later years she enjoyed gardening, poetry and genealogy. She was a member of the Gamma Chapter, Phi Sigma Alpha Sorority for years, served on the Board of Directors of the Burleson Family Association and was the co-author of The Flowers Chronicles. She especially loved to sing hymns with the nuns from Mother Theresa's convent in New York. We were all so incredibly blessed to have her in our lives.

She is survived by her brother, James R Burleson (Helen); her three children, Joseph A. Flowers, Jr., Linda B O'Neill, Carolyn Sue Pugh; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

There will be a wake at Faith Chapel on Beverly Parkway on Friday, July 12, 2013 from 6 - 8 pm and a graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 3:00pm at Bellview Baptist Church Cemetery on Saufley Field Road.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to Alice Bentick, a devoted care giver until her death, as well as the 6th Floor North nursing staff of New York Presbyterian Hospital.
