Her elder brothers, Franz and Conrad, immigrated to the United States first in 1909. Mary Ann, as she was known, and her younger siblings, Pauline, Nicholas and Michael, arrived at Ellis Island in August 1913, where they were detained briefly as single women and children under 16 traveling without a parent, guardian or escort. Once admitted, they went on to Strasburg, North Dakota. Mary Ann always lived with or near one of her siblings.
She became a U.S. citizen in 1944.
