Joseph Chaumont was born in St Julien, Savoie, Rhone-Alpes, France on Nov. 17, 1723. His dad was Jean-Francois de Chaumontet Chaumont (1682-1747) who was born in Chaumontet, Savoie, Rhone-Alpes, France. His mom was Anne Claudine Chappet Chaumont (1688-1728) who was also born at Savoie, Rhone-Alpes, France.

In 1743 Joseph enlisted in the Savoy Regiment under Lazare in Geneva. Returned home on leave in uniform. He later went to Rotterdam and departed for the USA in 1750 on the St. Andrew. He arrived in Philadelphia, PA on August 18, 1750 with 278 other passengers after a 6 month journey from Rotterdam. Two names of the manifest were Joseph Shomony and Gallus Fricker. Neither could write. Jospeh had enough money saved to pay passage, the immigration fees, to acquire land and to establish a business. He settled in what is now Berks County, near Reading, PA.

When Joseph Chaumont came over to the USA, the last name changed to "Shomo". Joseph married Anna Maria Fricker (1728-1765) in 1751 in Bern, Berks, Pennsylvania. Anna Maria was the daughter of Charles Gallus Fricker 1700 – 1755 and Susanna Sutterrean Fricker 1707 –. Anna Maria was born in Germany. The couple had 4 sons: John Shomo (1752-1836) , Bernard Shomo (1753-1793), Anthony Shomo (1756-1812) and Joseph S. Shomo (1759-1797). Joseph's sons fought in the Revolutionary War.

He operated an inn and farmed on a small scale to provide food for his family and the inn. Anna Maria died in 1765, 7 days after childbirth (The child also died). She was buried at the St Peter the Apostle Church in Reading, Berks County, PA. Here's the web link about her and the church:
http://www.goreadingberks.com/religion/catholicfaith/history/stpeters.php

In 1769, Joseph married Maria Catharina. Joseph and Maria Catharina had one daughter, Catharina. Joseph died in March, 1786 at Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA. John was his oldest son, and therefore entitled to receive his birthright.

This is from many different sources The ancestry of Anthony Shomo (1756-1812) and some of his descendants is from three FTM World Family Tree disks: Vol. 2, Tree # 3477; Vol. 8, Tree # 1845; Vol. 22, Tree # 2135, and is undocumented. Notes indicate that Anthony and his father, Joseph, fought in the Rev. War. Many Shomo Reamer (Riemer) and Rosenberger births and baptisms are documented in the 1983 Stewart and Wust publication, DAVIDSBURG CHURCH BAPTISMS 1785-1845. This Davidsburg Lutheran Church split in about 1821 to become St. Matthews Lutheran Church and Emmanuel Lutheran Church. These two churches came back together in 1956 as Reformation Lutheran Church.
Much interesting and valuable information concerning the New Market area and families has been found in William A. Good's 1992 book, SHADOWED by the MASSANUTTEN, which containes newspaper articles and obits, family histories, gravestone inscriptions, and many court records.

"The first death record is that of Anna Maria Chaumont, buried in the Catholic graveyard, Reading, November 11, 1765.". Knowing the history that Joseph traveled to America on a boat with the Fricker family from Germany, and he and Anna Maria fell in love. One wonders about this song by Jim Reeves. It's just like the story of Joseph & Anna Maria Chaumont: https://lyrics.fandom.com/wiki/Jim_Reeves:Anna_Marie

"Tonight while the snowflakes are falling
Here in my dreams I can see
The white cherry blossoms of Chaumont
Where I walked with Anna Marie

Anna Marie, Anna Marie, my heart remembers and sighs
C'est vous, c'est vous. m'aimez beaucoup
I miss you Anna Marie

My heart was pledged to another
But I knew as I crossed the sea
That I'd never loved any other
As I loved my Anna Marie

Anna Marie, Anna Marie, my heart remembers and sighs
C'est vous, c'est vous. m'aimez beaucoup"

She died in Pennsylvania around Thanksgiving time right before the snow would start falling. Joseph came to America from France meeting Anna Maria on the boat to America who was coming with her family from Germany.
