James Martin Armstrong served as a Private in Goodwinn's Seventh Infantry of the Tennessee Militia in a company commanded by Captain John Spinks and regiment commanded by Colonel John Winn for a term of three months during the War of 1812.

He was an early land owner in Wabash County, Illinois, and probably lived here for a short time before returning to Wilson County, Tennessee. He and Polley are buried at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church near Statesville in Wilson County, Tennessee. Field stones mark their graves. James Martin and Polley (Payne) Armstrong were the parents of at least six children.
