Abner, the first Sheriff of Edwards County, enlisted in Tennessee 10-4-1813 for service in the War of 1812 in Co. "R", in the Infantry under Col McCreary and Capt. McKnight. He was appointed sheriff of Edwards County by the territorial governor of Illinois, Ninian Edwards on November 28 1814. Edwards County at this time comprised one-third of the present states of Illinois and Wisconsin. The county seat of this immense county was at Palmya. U0pon official organization of Edwards County, he was elected sheriff and served 1815-1820. He was also the first sheriff of Wabash County (1825-1828) after its formation on December 27, 1824 from Edwards County. He also served as Wabash County's first treasurer and assessor in 1825. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the second (1820), sixth (1828) and seventh (1830) Illinois General Assemblies. The 1820 Illinois census lists Abner as head of household with wife and three female children (born between 1814 and 1820. One daughter Martha is thought to have married a Campbell.
