Educated in Pennsylvania schools and graduated from Wesleyan University in IL. He was a well known mid west author, educator and editor.

He married Abbie Moss of Birmingham, IA 27 Mar 1872, and they had the following children:
Charles, Wendell Holmes, George M. 1873-1921, Eli Ernest 1877-1956, and C, Lloyd 1880-
Abbie died in 1899, and he married Lola Sarchet of Charleston, IL in 1901. They had no children.
He was superintendent of Schools in Augusta, Pascola and Charleston, IL for 30 years.
He moved to Holton, KS to be President of Campbell University, the Lincoln Normal in Lincoln, NE.
After retiring, he moved to Kansas City where he wrote for newspapers. He moved to Branson, MO and started the White River Leader which he sold 4 years ago and moved back to Kansas City.
