Hazel Irene Johnston, 88, of Kissimmee, Fla. and formerly of Wakefield, died on Monday, Feb. 15, after a long illness. Mrs. Johnston was born in Larry's River, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Simon A. and Angelique (Pellerin) Gerrior.
As a child, she moved to Wakefield with her family and attended the Wakefield Public Schools. She and her husband, Leslie J. Johnston Sr., were married in St. Joseph Church when she was 20. They built their first home on Preston Street, and in the early years as she raised her family, she was a member of the St. Joseph Ladies Sodality and the Mothers Club. Later, she was employed by L.B. Evans Son Co. for 10 years, after which she retired. She and her husband enjoyed several trips with the Retired Men's Club, and for many years made annual trips back to Nova Scotia.
Besides her husband, she leaves three sons and their wives: Les Johnston Jr. and Bill Johnston of Kissimmee, and Brad Johnston of North Reading, a former daughter-in-law, Betsy Cole of Malden; a brother, Tom Gerrior of Lynn, 10 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, six nieces and nephews; and 13 grand nieces and nephews. Mrs. Johnston was preceded in death many years ago by her brother William, and more recently by her son, Thomas Johnston, his wife Barbara Johnston, and her sister-in-law Mary Gerrior.
A memorial Mass will be held at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kissimmee. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the McDonald Funeral Home in Wakefield, with buril in the family lot in Forest Glade Cemetery. Arrangements are being coordinated by Grissom Funeral Home in Kissimmee and the McDonald Funeral Home in Wakefield.
