Eliza was the daughter of Harvey Austin. She was 35 years old at the time of her passing. Eliza was the wife of Alexander Philip Bates.
*At the residence of her father, Harvey Austin Esq., in Monroe Township, on the 24th of August, Mrs. Eliza Bates, wife of Philip Bates of Cleveland, aged 37 years. We who have known Mrs. Bates from her childhood, knew how to prize not only for her natural kindness of heart, her many domestic virtues, but especially for her Christian character. She has gently and calmly, through the grace of Christ, entered that rest which is reserved for the "Pure in Heart." May mourning spirits though doubly afflicted recently by the death of a son in the army, and now by a daughter's removal, be ably to say "Thy will be done." (Com. M.M. August 31, 1864)
