Nicholas Swearingen was born in Holland, but at the age of 10, he and his brother were kidnapped and brought to Maryland. Gradually he worked his way westward and settled in Cooper County, Missouri. Here he purchased land about February 1836. There he married Jane Mahan the daughter of James T Mahan who is believed to be the second white man to settle on the south side of the Missouri River. The couple had nine children: William, John, Samuel, Thomas Jefferson married Lucy Hughs, Bryan died in Colorado, Martha married Rev Williams a Baptist preacher, Lucy Catherine married George Lee Thomas, David and Berrie married Mr. Shelton.
