Carl Arndt, 78, passed away Thursday morning at his home in Hilbert Junction following an illness of short duration, according to messages received in the afternoon by his sisters, Mrs. Bertha Fedler, N. Seventh street, and Mrs. Fred Schmidt, superior avenue.
Mr. Arndt was born in Germany October 16, 1841, and for forty-five years had resided in Hilbert Junction. He was a blacksmith. He was a veteran of the Civil War having served more than three years. In the battle of Gettysburg he receivd three wounds in one day; an arm wound, a head wound, and one wound in the side, from which he fully recovered. Mr. Arndt was well known here although he never resided here.
The deeased was twice married. His first wife died thirty-four years ago and their five children, two sons and three daughters, also preceded him in death.
Those who are left to mourn his death are his second wife; two sons, Otto, Forest Junction, Bernard, Milwaukee, and one daughter, Miss Louise, at home; four sisters, Mrs. Fred Naatz, Abbottsford, Mrs. William Helmke, California, and Mrs. Fedler and Mrs. Schmidt, this city; and one brother, Christian Arndt, who resided at Red Wing, Minnesota.

The Times of last week briefly mentioned the death of Carl Arndt, which occurred at his home in Hilbert at midnight Wednesday, Dec. 11th, from heart failure following a short illness, at the age of 78 years.
Carl Arndt was a native of Seelebe, Province of Brandenburg, Germany and was born Oct. 16, 1841. At the age of sixteen desiring to see more of the world he left his home for America and after remaining a short time in the east came to Wisconsin and located at Sheboygan where he worked for a time and then went to Plymouth where he learned the blacksmith trade. He secured work at Fond du Lac in the early sixties and on Aug. 15, 1862 enlisted as a member of Co. E of the Twenty-sixth Infantry.
He was in all the engagements of his regiment and at the battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 was wounded twice. He was transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps March 2, 1864 and was mustered out of the service June 26, 1865. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Fond du Lac and resumed his work at the forge.
He was united in marriage on Jan. 4, 1868 at Sheboygan to Marie Resinius and in 1870 they moved to Hilbert where Mr. Arndt engaged in the blacksmith business and for many years did work in that line for the people of Hilbert and vicinity. His wife died on Aug. 13, 1885 and two years later he was married to Wilhelmina Metzger of Milwaukee.
Carl Arndt was widely known throughout the county and highly esteemed as a citizen and business man. People would drive miles out of their way to have work done at his shop, knowing that they would get a square deal and a good job. He was intensely patriotic and showed his loyalty to his adopted country in offering his services in the civil war and continued to show his loyalty all through civil life. His shop was a gathering place for farmers, neighbors and friends who were always sure of a welcome and a pleasant chat as he worked at the forge. He had a word of cheer for the down hearted and gave freely of his means to all worthy charity.
The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from the Lutheran church of which he was a life member, Rev. C. Witschonke having charge of the service and burial being made in the Lutheran cemetery. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Otto of Forest Junction and Bernard of Milwaukee and one daughter, Miss Louise at home, all of whom were in attendance at the funeral.
