Idell Marshall McElrath
Warrenton, VA
On Friday June 29, 2012, surrounded by her loving family in Warrenton, Virginia, Idell Marshall McElrath peacefully went home to be with her Lord. She was 92 years of age.
Idell was born on September 13, 1919 in Galax, Virginia, to Lee and Laura Dickens Marshall and was the youngest of their six children. She obtained her RN degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, where she met her beloved husband of 37 years, Dr. Percy John (P.J.) McElrath, Jr. They were married in Richmond on March 9, 1942 and Idell worked at MCV as an Emergency Room nurse until P.J. returned from service in World War II.
After the war they moved to Raleigh, North Carolina where they joined Westmimnister Presbyterian Church and raised their two children, Marsha Ann and Jay. They became members of the Carolina Country Club and Idell began her affiliation with Rex Hospital's Ladies Auxiliary of physicians' wives. In addition to her responsibilities as a homemaker and mother, Idell especially enjoyed golf and bridge. She so loved the game of golf that her skills earned her three holes-in-one over the course of her playing career, first on CCC number 11, then number 8, and finally on hole number 2.
Some of her fondest memories included the enjoyment of Christmas traditions, time spent with family at the beach, and preparing favorite foods for family and friends. One of her greatest pleasures, which also resulted in some of Idell's most treasured friendships, was dancing with husband P.J. and their fellow Dotti-Dells.
After the death of P.J. in 1979, Idell continued serving at Westminister and supported numerous charitable causes. She delighted in spending time with her children and grandsons, and was recognized by many in Raleigh as she drove her sporty Camaros. Into her later years she continued to enjoy taking leisurely walks "up the drive," appreciating the beauty of God's Creation.
She was predeceased by her parents and siblings, and is survived by daughter Marsha Ann McElrath Taylor, son-in-law Bradford Benjamin Taylor, and grandson Christopher Reid Earley, of Haymarket, Virginia; son John William ("Jay") McElrath, daughter-in-law Pamela P. McElrath, and grandson William Percy Scott McElrath of Richmond, Virginia; nephew Johnny Lee Marshall and his wife, Julia Ann, of Acworth, Georgia, and their children and grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service in Idell's honor will be held Saturday, July 7 at 11:00 at Westminister Presbyterian Church, located at 301 East Whitaker Mill Road, Raleigh. A Reception for family and friends will follow immediately after the service.
The family wishes to express its appreciation to Dee Dee Harris, Laurie Ray, and our dear friends at Sunrise of Raleigh, and The Villa at Suffield Meadows, as well as ther staff of Fauquier Hospital. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice of Warrenton, Virginia, 400 Holiday Court, Suite 101, Warrenton, Virginia 20186.
