Sawyer County Record Aug. 9, 1923
Man is Murdered Near Lemington
Frank Allen, a man 47 years of age, was shot and killed Monday afternoon by Wm. McCann, aged 60 years, at Lemington.

It is rumored the cause of the shooting was over a woman who refused to be ordered about by McCann. Mr. Allen was employed by McCann who was taking the woman in a lumber wagon to Lemington where they were overtaken by McCann and his wife in a car. McCann ordered the woman to give back some articles that he claimed belonged to him, but she refused. He and his wife went back to their home but he returned, going to C.M. Olson of Couderay and borrowing his 38-55 rifle to shoot a bear as he claimed, but instead overtook Allen and the woman on the road when he ordered the woman to get out of the wagon, which she refused. He then demanded Allen to stop the team, which demand was ignored. McCann then returned to his car, took out the rifle, and shot Allen through the heart, who died instantly.

McCann then abandoned his car and escaped into the woods where Sheriff Quail and deputies failed to locate him. The following noon he returned to his home where he was persuaded to give himself up.

He was brought to Hayward, Tuesday, and lodged in the County Jail. His hearing will be held next Monday.
