William was the son of Elijah Pickett Hudson Jr and Charlotte (Lottie) Emery Hudson. He was born in Swan Quarter, Hyde County, North Carolina on April 29, 1844.

William was married briefly to an unknown women who died only weeks after their marriage. William married for a second time to Sarah/Sally Ann Voliva about 1869. William and Sarah/Sally had four children, twins Elijah Pickett Hudson and Mary W. "Mamie" Hudson, Sabra A Hudson and Benjamin Joseph Hudson. Sometime shortly after Benjamin was born (in 1875), Sarah/Sally presumably died.

William married his third wife, Arcadia Sawyer, in 1878 and they had a son, William Lovis Hudson.

During the Civil War, William was a lieutenant in the NC Calvary, Union Army. After the war, William was honorably discharged and served as a deacon in the Primitive Baptist Church.

It was said that William was quite deaf and was killed by a train while carrying a basket of corn and crossing the tracks.
