Following is one of many newspaper articles about the death of Lucy and her family.
VERMILLION - Funeral services for two daughters and four grandchildren of a Vermillion couple - six of eight killed in a two car smashup near Nephi early Sunday - were held Wednesday in Hunter.
Rites were held at 10 a.m. in the Hunter Ward chapel for Mrs. Lucy Colby Spencer, 33, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Colby, Vermillion, and four of her children, Elaine 11, Cinthia 9, Val C. 5, and Alan Troy, two and a half months.
Services for Mrs. Thora Colby Peterson, 45 another daughter of the Vermillion residents, and a sister of Mrs. Spencer were held at 11:30 A.M. also in the Hunter Ward.
The six died shortly after midnight Sunday when the car in which they were riding collided with a southbound automobile believed to be driven by Terry Rosenvall, 28, Salt Lake City, and formerly of Gunnison.
Rosenvall, along with a companion, Cecil Junior Lutrell, listed as between 40 and 50, address unknown but believed to be Seattle, Wash., both died in the crash, which made the accident the fifth worst in Utah's highway fatality history.
Burial services for Mrs. Peterson were held Wednesday afternoon in the Gunnison City Cemetery. Mrs. Spencer and her four children, were buried in the Aurora Cemetery, also on Wednesday.
Mrs. Peterson, a widow, along with Mrs. Spencer and children had been assisting in the home of their parents in Vermillion, while their mother, Mrs. Colby, had been in a Richfield hospital suffering wtih pneumonia.
They had left late Saturday for their home after Mrs. Peterson received a telephone call from her home in Salt Lake City, informing her that a daughter, Thera, was ill and would possibly have to be hospitalized.
While in Vermillion, the two sisters had been helping their parents work out plans for observance of their golden wedding anniversary next month.
The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 91 four miles south of Nephi when the southbound Rosenvall car swerved into the northbound lane of traffic and struck the northbound vehicle.
Mrs. Peterson was born Oct. 13, 1921, in Vermillion to Edwin L and Lucy Alvey Colby. She was married to Donald M. Peterson Jan 1 1940, in Richfield. later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died June 18, 1965
Survivors include a son, Donald M. Jr., serving an LDS Mission in Australia, daughter, Mrs. Gordon (Sheridan) Fleming and Thera Peterson, both Salt Lake City.
Mrs. Spencer was married to Gloyd LaRue Spencer of Aurora, Sep 2, 1950, in the Manti LDS Temple. She is survived by her husband, one son, John L. and a daughter, Annette, all of Hunter.
Both women are survived by their parents, Vermillion; two brothers, Harvey, New Haven Conn; Duane, Sigurd, sisters, Mrs. Albert (Norma) Brow, Travis AFB. Calif., and Mrs. William (Maurine) Howell, Kansas City, Mo.
Elaine Spencer was born March 23, 1956 in Salina, Cinthia Lucy Spencer was born Sept 7, 1958, in Richfield. Val C. Spencer was born Aug 27, 1962 and Alan Troy Spencer was born April 5, 1967, both in Salt Lake City.
Survivors include their father a brother and sister, maternal grandparents, and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Jay Spencer, Aurora.
