Robert F. Brewer came from a patriotic family, his father, two brothers and himself participating in the civil war. His father was major paymaster of the Cumberland and was killed by an explosion of the boiler on the steamer W. R. Carter on the Mississippi river while on duty. Robert was also killed in the same explosion and his body was never recovered. Another brother, Captain Charles Brewer, was killed in battle.
