Richard Joseph Gauthier, 83, of Longview entered the arms of his Lord Feb. 16, 2009, at the Hospice Care Center.

He was born June 13, 1925, in Duluth, Minn., to Wallace and Gladys (LaBeau) Gauthier. He attended Denfeld High School in Duluth and Longview Business College.

Dick served in the Navy as a dispatcher for the office currier service in the Russell Islands. He moved to the local area in 1946 and worked for Weyerhaeuser Plywood for 30 years. He retired as a hot press operator in 1979. He lived in Vancouver for 10 years before returning to Longview in October of 1989.

Dick was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir, a Boy Scout leader and a baseball coach. He enjoyed rock collecting, studying anthropology and geology, reading and studying the Bible, and raising a vegetable garden every year. Dick was a loving and compassionate family man.

He married Dorothy B. Luokkala Dec. 11, 1946, in Oakland, Calif. She survives him at home after 63 years of marriage. Also surviving are three children, Marsha Gauthier of Milwaukie, Ore., Steven Gauthier of Beaverton and Julie Gauthier of Longview; four grandchildren, Luke Gauthier of Longview, Scott Linman of Hillsboro, Ore., Alisha Gauthier of Vancouver and Nicole Hogan of Gresham, Ore.; six step grandchildren, Sharon, Haley, Brook, Maddy, Carson and Mackenzie; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Langdon Linman.

Dick was preceded in death by a sister, June Ripenburger.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Longview with Pastor Barney officiating.
