Nahunta, Ga., Jan. 10, 1936. The sudden death of Mr. J. A. Batten, of the Hickox district, Tuesday, ended the life of one of our oldest and most respected citizens.

For several months his health has not been so good, yet he was about doing little things to keep up his activity.
Tuesday he was putting up a stove flue, climbed up on the roof to saw out a hole for the flue, when he was seized with pains and clutching his heart, called out for aid. His wife was in the room below helping with the flue, and some neighbors near-by heard his cries and rushed to the house. When they got there he had crawled down the roof to the caves, where the ladder was, clinging to the roof. The managed to get him down but he was breathing his last, dying almost as soon as they got him to the earth.

Mr. Batten had been a pioneer citizen, a good farmer and neighbor, rearing a large family he is survived by a wife and quite a number of boys and girls. His funeral was Wednesday at Bethlehem. Rev. H. Clay Highsmith and several other ministers of the Primitive faith holding the sad rites.
