Ralph was the son of William Newby born 1591 in England, probably Northumberland, and an unknown mother. The family later moved to Easington Village, County Durham, where Ralph and all of his siblings were baptized into the Church of England.

His known siblings included sisters Alice (1615- ) and Rachel (1619- ) and also possibly a brother named John since John had a daughter named Rachel whose baptismal witnesses were Ralph and Rachel "Newbie".

Ralph married Dorothy Hichley on the 22nd of May 1636, in Easington, Durham County, England. 1629. The Parish marriage records there list them as Radulphus and Dorothea. All of their children were born in Easington, with the exception of Mark, born in Northumberland. Baptismal records exist in Easington for children William, Edward, Rachel, John, Elinor, and Ralph. It may be that after 1650, Ralph and Dorothy were already having doubts about the Church of England as we can find no baptismal records for Joseph and Isabella.

Ralph and Dorothy converted to the teaching of George Fox and the Society of friends sometime after 1650 and moved to Ireland to escape persecution of Quakers in England. Since the Catholic Irish were also persecuted by the English, they sympathized with the Quakers.

Ralph lived in Ireland until his death there as the Religious Act of Tolerance was not passed in England until 1689.

Ralph and Dorothy had the following children.

William, born in 1636 and baptized 14 August 1637 at Easington, County Durham, England

Edward, William's twin brother, baptized at the same time.

Rachel, born in 1637 was baptized in Easington on 30 August 1637.

John, born in 1644 Moorhouse, County Durham was baptized in Easington in Easington on Feb 22, 1645 and died in Dublin, Ireland in 1691. His wife was Grace Edmondson, sister of William Edmondson, a very well known Quaker minister who made three missionary journeys to America in the late 1600's.

Elinor, born in 1649 in Ramside, County Durham, and died in 1732 in Dublin. Her husband was William Norris of County Lancaster and later Dublin.

Ralph, born 1650 and baptized 13 October 1650 in Easington, County Durham.

Joseph, born 1654 in Moorhouse, County Durham and died in Wicklow, Ireland 1696.

Isabella, born between 1650 and 1859 in Moorhouse, County Durham. She married Cuthbert Roddom in England and died in 1728/29 in Dublin.

William was the first of the Newby line to leave for America, being one of the early members of the Chuckatuck Meeting in Nansemond, County, Virginia. This meeting was visited in 1672 by George Fox, the founder of the Society of Friends, and also by William's brother -in-law, the famous Quaker preacher William Edmondonson, during their tours of America.
