George Colby, the son of Ephraim and Catherine Gift Colby, was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania in 1810. George lived in Greene Township, Franklin County for most of his life. He married Anna Fox in 1837, and they had twelve children. George farmed for many years. Later, he was a master saddler, and taught several of his sons the trade. His last occupation, in the 1870's, was as a patent medicine vendor.

George died in Fayetteville on September 30, 1876, and was laid to rest at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church cemetery.
