A native of Stevenson, AL, he was the son of Rufus and Rebecca Burgess Gunter. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jane Alexander; and three sisters. He was employed by Dayco, having worked in the Maintenance Department for 28 years before retiring in 1979. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II and served in Japan. He enjoyed deer hunting and gardening and was of Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Kate Setzer Gunter; one stepdaughter, two stepsons, two sisters, three half sisters, a brother, three half brothers, two grandsons; nineteen stepgrandchildren; and one step great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in the mausoleum chapel of Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Burial will follow.
