Mrs. Mae Crump Mays, 90, of Route 1, Vilas, widow of Mr. Leonard Monroe Mays, died Friday, Dec. 13, 1991 at Watauga County Hospital.
She was born July 8, 1901, in the Wilson's Creek community of Avery County, a daughter of the late W.R. and Carrie Barlow Crump. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Hazel Brown and her husband, Roy, of Route 1, Vilas, Ruby Foster of Marietta, S.C., Marie Turner of Conover and Dot Holmes and her husband, Dobbin, of Fayetteville; seven sisters, Frances Francum, Edith Hartley, Louise Coffey, Eva Pearson and Alma Crump, all of Lenoir, Mary Woodring of Bakersville, Ohio, and Nell Wallace of Gastonia; and two brothers, Frank Crump of Lenoir and Fred Crump of Maiden. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Mrs. Anne Hardy and Mrs. Ruth Tester, and a son, Mr. Fred Mays.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Officiating was the Rev. Steve Goss. Burial followed in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Per her birth record, Reittie Mae Crump was born July 8, 1901 in Caldwell County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of William Raleigh (Riley) Crump and Carrie Barlow.
Per North Carolina Marriage Records, May Crump, age 18, daughter of Bill & Carrie Crump, married Alfred Church, age 21, son of Bonid & Lassie Church, on January 4, 1919 in Avery County, NC. One known child, Hazel Rachel Church, was born of this marriage.
On December 21, 1929, Mae Crump Church married Leonard Monroe Mays in Bristol, Virginia. No known children were born of this marriage. Leonard, a widower, had six minor children when he and Mae were married.
Mae's death certificate states her name as Reittie Crump Mays.
