CO G 36TH INDIANA INFANTRY, CIVIL WAR

Pension February 27, 1907


His pension records at the National Archives listed him as a Private, 20 Sep 1861 in Co K, 36 Reg, Indiana Vol Inf. He was 18 when enlisted and a farmer. He was honorably discharged 21 Sep 1864, Indianapolis, IN. His pension file no. 956916. There were about 12 John Thornburg Union Army pension files in and around Randolph County, Indiana.


He married Sarah J. Thompson June 2, 1865 and they made their home in Perry Township of Delaware County. The had six children:


Isaac W.O. Thornburg (1866-1874)

George L. Thornburg (1868-1941)

Peter Thornburg (1870-1872)

Charles E. Thornburg (1872-1953)

William Thornburg (1874-1953)

Eva Thornburg (Jul-Sept 1882)


His wife died shortly after Eva was born. In 1900 he was a grocer living as a boarder in Stoney Creek Township, Randolph County. He had a stroke that affected his left side in 1899. By 1910 he was living with his sister Angeline Dillie and her family in Stoney Creek Township, Randolph County and had no income. He was listed as a Union Army veteran.


He does not have a marker in the Union Cemetery, but is probably buried in the old part near his wife and youngest children. His sister Angeline Thornburg Dillie is also buried in that part.
