DANIEL, Virgil
1963
Virgil Daniel Clarence Douglas Castle Two men were killed and two others seriously injured Thursday, in a head-on collision of two automobiles on U.S. 23, about eight miles north of Paintsville. The accident occurred at 12:45 a.m. Dead are Virgil Daniel, 21, of Ulysses and Clarence Douglas Castle, 22, of Nippa. Injured are Homer Castle, 25, and James McCarty, 16. According to State Policeman Jack Music, Clarence Douglas Castle, driving a 1954 Ford, 2-door, was traveling north, and Virgil Daniel, in a 1953 Chevrolet, 2-door, was going in the opposite direction. According to Music, the four men had been together, and Daniel had got out of Castle's car at Sycamore School and had gone to Border's Café where the four had planned to meet later. The other three had visited the Route 23 Drive-In and left the drive-in only 15 minutes before the accident to go to Borders Café. Castle had just come out of the curve on the south side of Sycamore Hill, at what is known as the Milton Joe Branch, when his car collided head on with the Daniel car. It is believed Daniel, becoming impatient, had started to look for his companions. Virgil Daniel, Homer Castle, and James McCarty were thrown from the car which landed on the top side and afterward caught fire and burned. The Daniel car was demolished. Homer Castle suffered deep lacerations to the head. McCarty received a broken collar bone, fractured rib, and punctured lung. His condition was reported to be satisfactory after being on the critical list for several days. Daniel was born in Johnson County May 9, 1943, a son of Earl and Saviller Fairchild Daniel. Surviving besides his parents are his wife, Sue Young Daniel, and a son, Virgil Daniel, Jr.; also the following brothers and sisters: Earl Daniel, Jr., Thelma; Paul Anderson Daniel, Nippa; Beulah Hyden, Thealka; Ella Rediford, City; Mary Jackson, Thealka, and Vertie Daniel, Nippa. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 13, at the Walnut Grove Church by the Rev. Bruce Daniel. Burial was in the family cemetery at Ulysses. Clarence Douglas Castle, son of Lora Castle was born April 14, 1941, and was a resident of Nippa. He was a miner by occupation. Surviving besides his mother are four brothers, Vencil Ray, Ronnie, Lonnie, and Bernard Castle, Jr., all of Nippa. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, at the Mouth of Rush Freewill Baptist Church by the Rev. Claude Preston and the Rev. Bruce Daniel Burial was in the Sycamore Cemetery at Nippa.
