James Michael Beeler, 71, of Boonsboro, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at his home.

Born September 17, 1926 in Boonsboro, he was a son of the late Joseph Ellsworth Beeler II and Nina Marie Bender Beeler.

He retired from the Western Maryland Railroad in Hagerstown after 37 years of service.

He was a veteran of the Maryland National Guard and the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was also a Maryland Minuteman.

He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Boonsboro where he had served on the consistory and as a Sunday school teacher.

He was a past chairman of the Utilities Commission for the town of Boonsboro; a 55-year member of the Boonsboro Vol. Fire Co.; a life-member of the Boonsboro Ambulance and Rescue Co. No. 69; a member of Clopper-Michael Post 10 American Legion in Boonsboro and Antietam Lodge 197 AF & AM Masons in Keedysville.

He was a former instructor for the American Red Cross and the American Heart Assn., and an Emergency Medical Technician instructor for the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems.

He is survived by his wife Peggy Otzelberger Beeler, whom he married November 21, 1948; one daughter, Marcie J. Knight of Smithsburg; two sons, J. Michael Beeler II of Boonsboro and Marc D. Beeler of Baltimore; three sisters, Sarah B. Shafer of Hagerstown and Mary A. Welty and Bettie J. Houser, both of Boonsboro; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph E. Beeler III.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Joseph I. Donovan III will officiate. Burial will be in the Boonsboro Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, MD 21740, or the John Marsh Cancer Center, 11110 Medical Campus Drive, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
