James was an African American who came to California from Kentucky in 1849.In Kentucky James was born a slave where when he was a young adult he was in charge of training the dogs and horses at the Churchill farm. The Churchill family released most of their slaves in 1840. James and 30 others left for California in 1849 arriving in Sacramento in the Fall of that year. James settled in Northern California, had good and bad luck as a gambling man, and decided to put his money into some land in Nevada City and worked as teamster with his own horses. James married Mary Burns in 1861, who's family had moved to California in the 1850's. They lived in Marysville where they owned a large piece of land where they built a home and had many farm animals and cows to supply milk and a garden to raise vegetables to feed their large family. After James passed Mary had help from her children and grandchildren to keep the farm going. Their home and the land was located in the area of west 11th Street and it ran up to and on the other side of the north levee.
