DEATH OF MRS. MAY CARLIN.
The following announcement of the death of Mrs. Mary Carlin, mother of Hon. Walter E. Carlin, of Jerseyville, is taken from The Carrollton Gazette:
All that was mortal of this most estimable lady passed away in death, at her residence in this city, last Sunday at 7 o'clock P. M., aged 83 years and 5 days. She was born in Halifax county, Virginia, July 8, 1805, being the oldest daughter of William and Agnes Goode.
Her father served in the War of 1812. He moved from Virginia to Kentucky, where he spent eight years, and then brought his family to this county in 1825. The subject of this notice was married to William Carlin, the 7th of December, 1825, who died in 1850, leaving her a widow with eight children, seven of whom are living, namely:
Mrs. Julia Hardin, Mrs. J. C. Kelly, and T. J. Carlin, of this city; Mrs. Papin of St. Louis; Major W. E. Carlin of Jerseyville; Mrs. John Long of San Diego; and General William Carlin, United States Army. These, with a number of grandchildren and a host of friends, mourn her loss and revere her memory.
Mrs. Carlin had been a member of the Christian church in this city for forty-seven years, and her whole life was that of a noble, Christian woman. Her funeral was conducted by Elder J. A. Berry, assisted by Elder Primm, from her late residence, on Tuesday at 1:30 p. m., and was largely attended. Her remains were laid at rest beside her husband.
Sixty-three years of her life were spent in this community, and all who knew her, loved and esteemed her. Especially the old settlers remember with pleasure Mrs. Mary Carlin. Living the life of a Christian mother, she leaves to her family the heritage of an honored name, and she closes her earthly career blessed by all, and in the sweet peace of a child of God.
