Mrs. Arnaud, the former Gladys Godeaux, accidentally drowned at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Atchafalaya River.
Deputies in Sheriff Adler Ledoux's office first said she had gone swimming and failed to return.
After completing their investigation, they reported that the Arnaud family and another family were camping on the river bank just south of Krotz Springs. The children in both families were swimming near the bank. Mrs. Arnaud failed to see one of her children, became alarmed and waded into the water.
Deputies said the current pulled her under. The child whom she thought was missing was on the bank.
Mrs. Arnaud is survived by her husband, two sons, two daughters, her parents, six brothers and two sisters.
