Born in Center, Texas to Hollie and Dollie Cox-Strickland he enlisted into the Regular Army on May 10, 1917 at Jackson Barracks, New Orleans, Louisiana. He was assigned to Company I of the 9th Infantry Regiment (Manchus) at Camp Wilson, Texas. On September 18th, 1917 PFC Strickland and his unit set sail for France aboard the RMS Carmania to join the fight. As part of the 2nd Infantry Division (Indianhead) the 9th Infantrymen earned battle streamers for their colors at Lorraine, He de France, Aisne-Marne, and St. Mihiel. In 1918, the Manchu Regiment received the French Fourragère for gallantry during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. During this time PFC Strickland was wounded three times; April 13th, 1918, June 2nd, 1918 and July 18th, 1918. Eight months after the armistice he returned to the United States aboard the SS Mongolia with the Medical Detachment of the 19th Headquarters Motor Command. Arriving in Hoboken, New Jersey 10 days later he was honorably discharged on August 22, 1919 with surprisingly zero disability. He was awarded the Wound Chevron (Purple Heart with 2 oak leaf clusters), World War I Victory Medal and the honorable discharge lapel pin (silver). On October 21, 1923 he married wife Zilla and they raised five children. Two brothers, Drayton and William would also serve in the war. Ernest and wife Zilla rest in the Mankin Cemetery, Trinidad, Henderson County, Texas where they resided during the last nine years of his life.
