Remembering US Army World War I Veteran Private Drayton Strickland on the 67th year of his passing. Born in Shelby County, Texas to Hollie and Dollie Cox Strickland he grew up with 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Two of his brothers William and Ernest also served in WW I. On the first National registration day, June 5th, 1917 for men 21 to 31 years of age Drayton traveled from Shelbyville to Center like many others did and registered for the draft. Almost a year later he and over a hundred others were inducted in Center, Texas and sent to basic training. Private Strickland became a member of Company A, 4th Infantry regiment at Camp Merritt, New Jersey. From there approximately June, 1918 he found himself in France with his unit and remained in the fight until returning to the US after the war in August 1919. He was awarded the World War I Victory Medal and the WW I Honorable Discharge lapel pin. Mr. Strickland passed away in the VA Hospital in McKinney, Texas on April 4th, 1950 at the age of 58 from bronchopneumonia.
