Moscow -- Helen O. Burton, a retired Moscow seamstress and clerk, died of cancer Tuesday morning at her home. She was 58.

Before illness forced her retirement in March, she worked as a seamstress and clerk at Green's Cleaners in Moscow.

The daughter of Lloyd K. and Lucile Richardson Shahan, she was born May 9, 1934, at Colfax.

She started school at Garfield, Wash., then attended fourth through eighth grades at Harvard, Idaho, and graduated from Potlatch (Idaho) High School in 1952.

She worked as a nurse's aide at Gritman Hospital in Moscow and at the Moscow Steam Laundry prior to her marriage to Rod Burton in Moscow in 1956.

They divorced in 1973, and she went to work at Green's Cleaners.

She enjoyed the outdoors, knitting and crocheting, cats and other animals and activities with her family and friends.

Survivors include three sons, Mark E. Burton and Gregory S. Burton, both of Moscow, and Bruce C. Burton of Athol, Idaho; a brother, Royce Shahan of Colfax; a sister, Neva L. Kelly of Coeur d'Alene; and four grandchildren.

A son, Rodney, died previously.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Short's Funeral Chapel at Moscow with the Rev. Mark Finley of St. Augustine's Catholic Church at Moscow officiating.

Cremation will take place and private inurnment will be at the Moscow Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials be sent to the Hospice of the Palouse, P.O. Box 9461, Moscow, Idaho 83843.
