Elias Marsden was born in England, and arrived in the Port of Baltimore with his family in the third quarter of 1827, according to Baltimore, Passenger Lists, 1820-1948. The ship, which originated in Great Britain, was not named.

Elias became a naturalized American citizen on September 23, 1844, witnessed by J R Swain and James Marsden.

On May 4, 1848 Elias Marsden was married to Elizabeth Anna Rose in Baltimore County, Maryland. They were parents to ten children.

He appears in the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 US census records in Baltimore, Maryland, and in several Baltimore City directories; he was a tailor. In the 1880 census taken on June 4, Elias reported that he had been unemployed for the past 12 months and was disabled with consumption.

Elias Marsden died nine months later. Two identical mortuary notices appeared in the Monday, March 14, and Tuesday, March 15, 1881 issues of the Baltimore Sun:

MARSDEN - Suddenly, on the 12th instant, at 2:15 P.M., ELIAS, in the 59th year of his age, beloved husband of Elizabeth A. Marsden. (Washington (D.C.) and Washington county (Iowa) papers please copy.)
A light is from our household gone,
A voice we loved is still;
A place left vacant on our hearth
Which never can be filled.
Farewell, wife and children dear,
Sisters and brothers kind;
And fond relations whom I loved,
I leave you all behind.
The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend his funeral, from his late residence, No. 59 Brune street, on Tuesday afternoon, 15th instant, at half-past two o'clock.
