FINAL RITES HELD MONDAY FOR DUANE MASSEY

Final rites honoring Duane Massey, 23, who died Thursday of last week at 9:30 p.m. at the Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City of natural causes, were conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in the Vernal First-Fifth Ward Chapel.

Prayer at the Vernal Mortuary was offered by Grant Southam.

Prelude and postlude music at the chapel was rendered by Mable Stagg, with Mark M. Hall offereing the invocation.

A solo, "My Father Knows" was sung by Chellus M. Caldwell, accompanied by Mrs. Stagg.

First speaker during the services were Woodey B. Searle, followed by a solo, "In the Garden" by Glade M. Sowards, accompanied by Mrs. Stagg.

Capt. Joseph Fischle of the R.O.T.C. at the Utah State University was the second speaker, followed by Bishop Dean Haslem from the Logan Ward of which Duane was a member, who also spoke.

The closing song "Beyond the Sunset" was sung by Glade and Elizabeth Sowards, accompanied by Mrs. Stagg, with Sheldon Galley offering the benediction.

Burial was in the Maeser Fairview Cemetery with the grave being dedicated by Russell Robison.

Pallbearers were Jack Allred, Mike Lavanger, Frank Williams, Gerald Hill, Kent Carleson and Jackie Turner.

Honorary pallbearers were all members of the R.O.T.C. Society at the Utah State Unitversity of which Cuane was a member: Col. L. R. Pugh, Claine Peterson, Dale Smethurst, Duane was ordained a Priest in the Church of Jesus Christ Keith Foulger, Dale McCormick, Capt. J. Fischle, Gene Jensen, Brent Allred, Phil Ashbaker and Paul Hancock.

Duane was born July 14, 1940, in Vernal, a son of John D. and Florence Allen Massey. He attended schools in Vernal and graduated from the Uintah High School with the class of '59.

At the time of his death Mr. Massey was a student at the Utah State University at Logan, majoring in the field of engineering and was a member of the cadet society of the R.O.T.C.

Duane was ordained a Priest in the Church of Latter-Day Saints, March 3.

Survivors are his mother, father, Hayden, Colorado; brothers and sisters, Allen, Jay D. Dennis, Dell Elynn and Maureen, all of Vernal and a grandfather, Van Massey, Vernal.
