Civil War: Company D, 1st California Cavalry
Harvey Milton McConkey was the son of John Sharp McConkey (Oct. 3, 1796, Abingdon, Washington Co. VA-Jan. 9, 1865, Edgar, Edgar Co., IL) and Harriet King (Dec. 4, 1797, Washington Co., VA-May 18, 1848, Edgar, Edgar Co., IL). His father was a veteran of the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and the Mexican War. Harvey and his brothers Jonathan Montgomery, Elkanah Dulaney (1827, Edgar Co., IL-1888, Walla Walla, WA), and Sidney Edward joined the rush of '49-ers to California in search of gold. The four brothers appear in the 1850 U.S. Census at Cosumnes River, El Dorado County, on October 4. Shortly thereafter Harvey, Elkanah, and Sydney headed back to Illinois, where they appear again in the 1850 U.S. Census as "miners" at the family farm in Edgar County, Illinois, on November 1. Also listed are Harvey's father and step-mother Mary, sister Roseanna Eleson, and brother Leonidas Hamilton. Harvey had returned to California by 1861 where he enlisted as a private at Marysville September 6, and was mustered into Company D, 1st California Cavalry. He was posted to New Mexico Territory where he was wounded in action January 28, 1864. Private McConkey was mustered out at Fort Union, New Mexico Territory, September 30, 1864. Three of his brothers also served in the Union army: George Washington McConkey (major, Field & Staff, 5th Illinois Cavalry), Leonidas Hamilton McConkey (private, Company E, 5th Illinois Cavalry), and Sidney Edward McConkey (sergeant, Company E, 5th Illinois Cavalry).
After the war Harvey returned to Illinois where he married Eliza Jane "Jennie" Longacre in Edgar County, November 24, 1868. Harvey and Eliza appear in the 1870 U.S. Census on their farm at Arcola Township, Douglas County, Illinois, with their son Addison Lee, born September 1869. The family moved to a farm in Crawford County, Missouri, in 1871. Harvey filed for a Civil War veteran's pension December 30, 1890, and received application No. 975,068 and certificate No. 931,364. The 1900 U.S. Census found him and Eliza living on their farm with daughter Rosa Clementine and Rosa's husband Andrew Charles White, and grand-daughter Gladys Theresa White (1899, MO-1988, MO). Eliza indicated she was the mother of six children, with four still living. The 1910 U.S. Census found him a widower living with his daughter Rosa, son-in-law Andrew C. White, and grand-daughters Gladys and Hattie Laura White at Oak Hill, Crawford County, Missouri. Harvey died in Crawford County five years later in 1915.

"January 26, 1864. Lieutenant Thomas A. Young, Fifth Infantry, California Volunteers, with one Sergeant and eleven Privates of the California Volunteers, started from Fort Craig, N. Mex. T., on a scout after Indians. On the twenty-eight instant the party was attacked by about sixty Indians, who wounded Lieutenant Young, Sergeant Thomas Richards and Privates Harvey McConkey, Thomas Clark, and Louis [Lewis] Mann, of Company D, First California Cavalry. In this affair seven Indians were killed. The party not being strong enough to continue the fight, returned to Fort Craig on the thirtieth Instant." (Orton, 670)
