John Sharp McConkey was the son of Scotch-Irish immigrant John McConkey and Jane Sharp.

In 1814 at the age of 18 he signed up to serve during the war of 1812, enlisting in the 3rd East Tennessee Militia and attaining the rank of Sergeant. In 1832, now in Edgar County, Illinois, he enlisted as 2nd Lieutenant in Captain J. Mayo's company, 1st Regiment, 2nd Brigade, Illinois Mounted Volunteers during the Black Hawk War. In 1846 he joined and was chosen Captain of Company H, 4th Illinois Infantry or the Mexican-American War. Two of his sons served under him. He is listed on the Illinois Honor Roll.

John and his first wife Harriet had 9 children - 8 sons and a daughter. Four of his sons served (and 1 died) in the Civil War - three of them in Coles County unit Company E, 5th Illinois Cavalry, including his 2nd son George who was chosen Captain of that company.
