Samuel was one of the early settlers of the village of Lynd, arriving there in 1872. He was a bachelor his entire life. Prior to moving to Lynd he lived in Basswood. Before moving he donated his land that the St.Mary's Episcopal Church was built on. He was a cabinet maker by trade. He played the violin. He was the son of Abraham C. and Isabella Sarah(Dunlop)Van Alstine. Siblings: James William, John, Mary C., Edward, George Gordon, Andrew Sidney, Isabella, Sarah, Charles Wesley, and Ellen Ruth.
