There were four children: Full names:Mary Emma, James William, Edith and Ellen Jane Nellie. I was given a birth date of August 27, 1827.

Citing his obituary:
An old and highly respected citizen of this town passed away on Friday in the person of Mr. James W. Vanalstine. Mr. Vanalstine had suffered for some time from a disease of the liver, but the immediate cause of death was the bursting of a blood vessel.
James W. Vanalstine was born in the town of Cornwall, Ontario on August 27,1827. He came to Ridgetown in 1858 staying for a short time, returning in 1854 and remaining here since with the exception of occasional visits to a brother In Minnesota, and a year recently spent with his daughter in Manitoba. He was a carriage builder by trade and also worked as a carpenter, but for many years lived retired. Mr Vanalstine was a well iformed man, fond of reading and an excellent conversationalist. A Liberal in politics he took deep but quiet interest in public affairs, and was alwalys tolerant of the views held by others. He was held in the highest esteem by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance, and the bereaved ones will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends. In 1856 the deceased was united in marriage to Miss Mary Porter who with two daughters and one son survived him. The daughters are Mrs. W. McCorkell of Fleming, Manitoba and Miss Edith of Winnipeg. The son, William, resides in Cleveland. One daughter, Nellie, who will be remembered by many, died about ten years ago (1891).
Service was held at the residence, York Street, on Monday afternoon, Revs, Jasper Wilson and C. Burdette officiating. A large number of friends and acquaintances were present to pay their last respects to the dead. The burial was postponed until Tuesday morning to permit Miss Vanalstine to arrive from Winnipeg and was private. Amon the relatives present besides the widow and daughter, Miss Vanalstine, were Richard Porter of this town, Henry Porter and Mrs. Wilder of Detroit, Mr and Mrs. E Kitchen and son of St.Thomas.
