Edward J Gorrie - Melrose, July 13 - Many persons were in attendance this morning at 9 in St Mary's Church where a solemn high mass of requiem was sung for Edward J Gorrie, 59, retired state aid engineer.
Rt Rev James J Mooney, pastor of the church, was celebrant, assisted by curates Rev Daniel F Moran, deacon, and Rev George B Gray, sub-deacon. Master of ceremonies was Rev David B Meskell of St Pius Church, Lynn.
Seated withing the sanctuary was Rt Rev Arthur V Lyons, Archdiocesan Director of Cemeteries. A delegation from the state Department of Public Works included Edward J McCarthy, chief engineer; Patrick Cox, deputy chief engineer; Robert E Pyne and John McGovern, assistant chief engineer; Ray W Coburn, retired state aid engineer; Charles Weafer, assistant state aid engineer, and Thomas Hanron, Frank Chase, and John Fitzmaurice.
Also in attendance were a number of employees of Suffolk Superior Court, headed by Thomas Dorgan, clerk; Robert J Dorgan, assistant clerk, and Jeremiah Sullivan.
Interment was in Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield.
Mr Gorrie, who lived at 315 West Emerson st, died Thursday at Melrose Hospital. He has served with the Massachusetts Department of Public Works for 32 years, retiring last month because of failing health.
He leaves a wife, Cathleen H; two children, June L and Edward J, Jr, and a sister, Charlotte Gorrie of Dorchester.
